I am absolutely delighted to be able to review By Your Side by Ruth Jones, having enjoyed her previous books and tv work, thanks to Rosie at Transworld, Penguin Random House. The writing and creativity of Ruth Jones is divine! The Unclaimed Heirs Unit is a fascinating place. Imagine working there trying to piece together people’s belongings and unite them with their new owners. Linda Standish did that, and now, on the cusp of retirement, she takes on one final case. One which takes her to a Scottish island.

By Your Side draws you in with a little humour and a fantastic beginning and that’s it, the hook that doesn’t let go until the end, and even then, not completely, is there, compelling you to read on until the end.

Living in Scotland, myself and travelled around the country a bit, I can say she’s certainly done her research or used experiences well. I am impressed she has chosen, to mention Crainlarich, Perth and more… It’ll feel like a real adventure and road-trip for readers, especially those who have perhaps not heard of these places before. It’s also nice to see them get a mention with that feeling of familiarity for those who have heard of them or, like me, travelled to or through them.

By Your Side is exceedingly heart-warmingly emotional and highlights what is quite an unusual job, showing much care and attention so the deceased are not alone.

Ruth Jones brings together community, travel and discovery together that’s so absorbing that you forget the time as you’re drawn deeply into the plot and characters.

Linda is a fabulous written character who you really get to know, from her love pf chocolate, her kindness and pet hates.

Ruth Jones writes in quite an evocative way that makes you care about why Levi was on such a remote island and makes you want to know more about whether an heir will be found. The people you meet along the way are either enlightening, enriching or intriguing, humorous or a whole mixture.

Cleverly written, By Your Side has the contrast of the actual journey taken to the island with that of the life journey Linda Standish finds herself on. In turn it sends readers on quite the journey themselves throughout what quickly becomes a page-turner of a read.

By Your Side by Ruth Jones is a book I highly recommend isn’t just by your side, but in your hand as you settle down with a cuppa and allow the warmth and humour to ooze out of the pages into your very being.
By Your Side is a book you could pick up and read time and time again.

Spanning across a couple of decades, set between Boston and Dublin, The Truth of Ruby Cooper is smartly written, so following the time span is not confusing in this dark, immersive psychological thriller.

Ruby and Erin are sisters who have quite a comfortable life and it looks like all should be rosy in Boston, but a dark incident, which totally changes your perception of this family and turns everybody’s lives upside down.

Liz Nugent expertly and compellingly weaves serious, life changing issues throughout of trauma, sexual abuse, moral dilemmas and addiction. She’s written it with immense believeability.

Ruby, perhaps isn’t the most likeable character, but she is one of the most compelling to discover what lies beneath in her life. She and her mother move away from Boston to her gran’s house in Dublin to help her rebuild her life. It nicely doesn’t happen instantly, it isn’t a quick fix. Ruby becomes estranged from the rest of her family, which has totally imploded by then and readers are taken to the deepest darkest recesses of her mind and her struggles. What she does and her personality becomes rather twisty in what is a twisted book, but with high relevancy that are some people’s life experiences in either part or whole, as well as thought-provoking moments throughout.

As secrets are revealed of all that’s referred to as “the incident” and its subsequent consequences, the ending is unpredictable. It’s a showstopper!

Flawed characters is what Liz Nugent creates beautifully and dares to go places not every author does, making her psychological thrillers quite unique and such great page-turners. Ruby Cooper and her family are written in a compelling way that always leaves you wanting to read just another page, just another until you realise you do actually have to find time to sleep, but can’t wait to get back to it.

For a fast-paced, highly emotionally charged psychological thriller, I highly recommend The Truth of Ruby Cooper for anyone’s reading lists.

Margaret Ives has had quite the life, so it may seem. Much has been lived in the spotlight, now, journalist, Alice Scott wants to write a biography documenting her life. It just might be the piece of work her parents are proud of or at least see that her choice of career is a serious one and she can do the serious side of it. It isn’t going to be easy because of NDAs and there’s competition in Hayden Anderson to contend with as well. Margaret Ives gives both, rather juicy information. What is being spun out is rather intriguing and keeps you hooked into Margaret’s story.

Amongst the investigative journalism, there is romance in the air, but Alice and Hayden, it seems, aren’t always sure how to be around each other. He is tantalisingly curious about her. Masterfully, the tension between both Alice and Hayden is palpable.

There’s lots for readers to discover and lots that the characters have to discover throughout this engaging book.

Great Big Beautiful Life, with its intrigue that draws you in, the humour that makes you smile and laugh, the romance and characters with big lives to lead, could well be Emily Henry’s best book to date!

It was good being reunited with Adam Green. He’s now passed his pupilage and is a junior barrister. So, he’s climbing up the ranks as it were. It’s interesting to see his life moving onwards and upwards and what he has to deal with and investigate at each stage.
This time Adam is wrapped up in a mysterious case involving a murder mixed with the world of tv in the form of pointing the finger at celebrity chef. Sebastian Brooks.

Whilst being an entertaining book, it also takes you into the world of tv and the courtrooms, which is interesting.

The pace is good. I would say it probably is better to read The Trial by Rob Rinder first because of the way the books flow into each other. The books are a compelling read.
