This Is Your Trial

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

This is an audience participation (you don’t need to participate if you don’t wish to). It is worth noting that there are 3 different showing times for different audiences – One suitable for children, one suitable for families and another suitable for adults. Synopsis

Guilty or innocent? You decide. The award-winning, critically acclaimed courtroom roast returns for a 10th Fringe. You submit accusations against friends. Top comedians take on the roles of judge, prosecutor and defence, hearing testimony, cross-examining witnesses and improvising their arguments for each case. It’s up to the audience as jury to deliver their verdict. An international success, with five years in Australia and Ireland, the inspiration for CBBC’s hit show Monster Court, booked across the UK for corporate events and stag parties.

Review

This really is Your Trial. As you wait in the queue, you get handed a note to write down who you are accusing and why (get permission from the person first of all) and make it something funny and quite innocuous, this isn’t about falling out with people after all.

The room is set up to be a court. There is a judge, a defence barrister and a prosecutor.

Randomly, the papers are picked out and read by the judge, with the accused being invited to stand trial, whilst the accuser stays in the audience and both have questions to answer. The prosecution and defence sides say their case, the jury are the rest of the audience deciding whether the accuser is innocent or guilty. It all gets rather funny and because of the audience participation, this is where the improv comes in each time, although the premise of course stays the same as its foundation.

The actor giving the most assured and convincing performance is played by the prosecution. The defence had a bit of a shaky beginning, but did pick up and get into the groove by the time the second case was chosen.

I had a friend with me for my plus one – Jennifer Miller. It was her first time at the Fringe Festival. She does not blog, but we agreed that she should make a comment too. She says this: “I didn’t know what to expect. It was quite funny, once got into it. I would have liked to see more ‘cases’ and would consider going to the festival again next year.”
